Steve Gilbert MP

Member of Parliament for St Austell & Newquay

Out and about

As well as campaigning for the LibDems, I get involved in the local community.

Charity work

I have sat on the Lord Lieutenant's Fund for Youth. The fund was set up by Lady Mary Holborow (the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall) to help talented but disadvantaged young people who live in the county with funding to help achieve their potential.

I have also raised money for Cornwall Care. They work with older people, and their carers, across Cornwall.

My father is battling leaukemia. Cancer Research is a charity that is personal to me.

Career

Most of us have to work, and I'm no exception.

I work as a development manager for a local heritage centre.

It gives me a good insight into the challenges, and opportunities, businesses in Cornwall face.

Before moving back to Cornwall, I spent five years in London advising the fund management industry (pensions, savings and investments).

I was the UK public affairs manager for the world's largest fund management firm - Fidelity International.

In February 2006 I was admitted as a Member to the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

What about fun?

I spend a lot of time with my brother, his partner, and the latest addition to the the family - baby Jack - who was born in October 2006.

I've got a great group of friends. They are scattered all over the UK, Europe and beyond - but it's a good reason to travel.

And I try to stay fit - going to the gym four times a week and swimming. It's a great way to clear the head.
