NEWQUAY'S MP APPLAUDS CORNWALL COUNCIL'S LAP DANCING PLANNING REFUSAL11.40.47am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 19th Jul 2010
Stephen Gilbert, MP for Newquay, has applauded Cornwall Council for taking decisive action in rejecting the retrospective planning application for 'Diva's' to operate as a 'bar restaurant and night club providing entertainment including lap dancing'. Stephen has supported local campaigners who have fought to be consulted about the location of these clubs and the negative impact they have on the town. Stephen submitted his objections to this planning application citing concerns over anti-social behaviour, disorder, crime and noise. Commenting on the decision, Stephen said: "This decision is great news for Newquay, it follows Cornwall Council taking the same action against 'Halos' lap dancing club earlier this month. These decisions will come as a stark reminder to the operators of these premises that local people have strongly held concerns about their activities. "I believe that local people must have control of what happens in Newquay, and they must feel safe and at home when they walk through its streets at night. As the local MP, I will be pushing for the changes in licensing law that will see towns like Newquay turn their fortunes around."
