GILBERT CAMPAIGN SIGNS-UP TO 10:104.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 19th Oct 2009
Prospective MP Steve Gilbert has signed-up his Parliamentary campaign office up to the 10:10 scheme, and has pledged to cut his office's carbon emissions by 10% in 2010. Steve Gilbert said, "Last week the Government of the Maldives held a Cabinet meeting underwater to help highlight the extreme danger that country is facing by rising sea-levels. But climate change isn't just about countries on the other side of the world. Here in Cornwall the last three summers have been a wash-out and yet there were people sun-bathing when I was out knocking on doors this weekend." The 10:10 climate change campaign will reach the floor of the House of Commons on Wednesday when the Liberal Democrats lead an opposition day motion backing its proposals. The motion will call on Parliament, the Government estate and departments and the public sector to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 10% in 2010, compared to their 2009 levels Steve added, "The key point of the 10:10 campaign is to focus minds on achievable steps that taken together will make a real difference over time." "I will be putting in new light-bulbs in my campaign office, making sure the equipment is turned-off at night, not just left on stand-by, and turning down the thermostat a couple of degrees, as I work toward the 10% target." Since its launch last month, more than 35,000 people, 1,200 businesses and 850 schools and organisations have signed up to the campaign. The 10:10 campaign is urging individuals, businesses, schools and groups to join the campaign. More details about the 10:10 campaign are available at www.1010uk.org
