Steve Gilbert (centre) celebrates the rejection of the incinerator with campaigners

Stephen Gilbert, the Prospective MP for St Austell & Newquay, has said that he is "delighted" the proposed incinerator in St Dennis has been rejected by Cornwall County Council's planning committee.

Steve Gilbert, who earlier today addressed the planning committee and asked them to reject the application, said: "People in St Dennis have fought a long and sometimes lonely campaign against the incinerator, but they've stuck it out and, today, their perseverance and determination has paid off - they are a credit to Cornwall."

The motion to reject the application was put forward by Lib Dem Cllr Jackie Bull, the current Mayor of Restormel, and was overwhelmingly backed by planning committee members.

Steve Gilbert added: "The community has come together across the political divide to oppose this application. It's always been my view that incineration is the wrong option for Cornwall, that one-site is the wrong solution and that St Dennis is the wrong place. I am delighted that county councillors have agreed and put this idea where it belongs, in the recycling."
