Stephen Gilbert inspects the site for the planned incinerator at St Dennis

"A battle has been won but the fight must go on" said Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate Stephen Gilbert as he welcomed the unanimous decision of Restormel Borough Council to object to the plans for an incinerator in St Dennis and to call for a public inquiry.

At last night's meeting Stephen Gilbert told Restormel Councillors: "Incineration is not the right option, one-site is not the right solution and St Dennis is not the right place. Let's put this in a language that SITA bosses will understand and tell them 'Non'."

Speaking after the meeting, Stephen Gilbert said: "The community across Restormel has said loud and clear that it does not want an incinerator. Councillors from all the local political parties and from none are asking the County Council to think again."

"This is a key step forward in the campaign for a public inquiry."

Stephen Gilbert added: "Now the community has made its view abundantly clear, I have written to the land-owner, Lord Evelyn Boscawen, asking him to reconsider his willingness to lease the land to SITA for the site."
